Woodworking - Benches

Search Projects

Our client wanted a couple of rugged kid friendly benches for her dining / kitchen table. We had some salvaged Butternut lumber that had been (dis) figured by wood-boring Powderpost Beetles. Once the wood is kiln dried and finished the beetles are no longer active though they leave an interesting pattern of bore holes and tunnels in the finished wood. We used the Butternut in the tops and side supports of the benches with 2″ x 2″ Black Walnut legs and several Hickory stringers underneath for strength. A couple good coats of a fine Danish Oil brought out the natural colors and character of this wood while allowing heavy usage by the children and easy refinishing / retouching in the future.
